Marionville Gardens
Kitchen and Dining Remodel with Summer Lounge Extension.
This project was a challenge, it was originally meant to be larger to accommodate the clients wish list in the end we managed to create the same elements in a smaller space at a more economical cost.
The Kitchen was dated and desperately needed an upgrade. We added a few new cupboard doors to accommodate an integral microwave, a few draw packs for access of kitchen items and some internal pull out drawers for plates and other items. We fitted new worktops, tiles and flooring, along with above and under counter lighting. which gave the kitchen a brand new feel.
The dining area had an orangery style roof, from the kitche as you walked in there were many different levels, all of them catching the eye and making the area seem cramped and complicated. We removed the roof and lifted the original beam between the kitchen and dining area, which instantly made the space feel more open. As did dropping the breakfast bar to the same level as the sink unit. The view as you entered the kitchen was now open and uncluttered.
Internally the area was narrow, so I suggested that Banquette seating would be a good idea to help conserve space and add something a little different. The result was a cosy seating area which in the evening is lit with ambient light supplied by the new wall lights though out the area.
The extension was 12sqm and did not require planning permission. The area has added a lounge area for summer evenings with the sliding doors open. This space is also allows instant access to the external dining are from the kitchen making the space more amenable.
The external window was removed and an internal door was installed to connect the new space to the original living room. It has created an open airy feel to the original lounge.
For the interior styling, the client had a preference for green. Originally adverse to dark colours, we eventually found a colour palette that worked. The kitchen was a dark space with a lot of white, so it made sense to paint the walls on show a darker green, which worked well and showcased the kitchen units and tiles. The colour was then continued through to the new extension and combined with an off white with a green base. The two worked perfectly with the fabric chosen.
I always like to work with colours that are bold but timeless and easy to live with. I do however, like to take my clients out of their comfort zone and introduce something different.
The fabric for the blinds and curtains were introduced the client who categorically said, “I don’t think I can live with that”. I left the fabric for her to look at for a while. When I came back, she didn’t want to consider anything else, the result looks fabulous. The fabric is a rich velvet, the colour adds depth and the fabric adds a touch of luxury.
Overall the new scheme has given the this space a modern clean look and the space is now an area where my client can entertain friends and family, which was the first item on her wish list.
