CREATING NEW SPACES
This property in Marshfield was in need of some re-adjustments to accommodate a creative business and two growing children.
Most projects require walls taking down, in this case, what was required was the addition of walls to create new spaces for children and adults. The lounge which was a walk through to the dining area, which housed a kitchen table swamped with the clients gift bag business and then through to the kitchen, had the wall reinstated. This created a new space for adults to relax and watch the television without the chaos of toys and sowing. The kitchen was extened into a conservatory area and now ran into the old dining area. This provided a play area and family room of the kitchen, which also now opened up on the garden making it a great space for children to play safely whilst the adults enjoyed a cup of tea. The garage became the new creative studio, contained and peaceful away from the main hub of the house. Opening up the hallway by removing the WC and placing it of the Utility room, allowed access via the kitchen and garden rather than needing to walk to the front of the house.
The client brief for interiors was for something calming and neutral. Originally convinced that greys and creams would be the pallet of choice, the client allowed me to make suggestions and encourage her to explore some alternative colours.
The result was a mix of greens, blues and stone colours. I really like the idea of an exuberant loo, and introduced Emma Shipley Lost Frontiers wallpaper. I left it with the client who thought it was too wild, I asked her to keep it over night and have a think. By the morning I could not wrestle the paper from her. The Loo look amazing and the children loved it.
The client wanted to make the garden a more friendly space for children and adults to play. I designed a new play area in a space that otherwise would not be used in the corner of the garden where an old pond used to be, and created a space for a hot tub and a seated bar area for sipping prosecco on a warm summer evening. The children were very excited about their new play area and the grown-ups too.
